Maysara Winery McMinnville
The Momtazis are as well known for the quality of fruit emerging from their biodynamically farmed home estate vineyard as they are for their fine wines. They purchased their vineyard in 1997 and initially began farming organically before deciding biodynamic preparations were the best way forward – in order to produce fruit of the highest quality and ensure a sense of place in wines with a real stamp of terroir. The Pinot Gris comes from both the Momtazi vineyard and several other local vineyards. Very finely structured with excellent fruit purity and very good acidity, it is whole cluster pressed and goes through partial malolactic, which adds weight and texture. The Pinot Noirs though provide the real excitement here and all come from the home vineyard. The Jamsheed version is produced from a mix of clones across all the blocks on the property. Big, full and loaded with ripe dark chery and plum fruit the wine is the most accessible and forward of the trio. The Cyrus comes solely from Pommard clones planted in the lower lying Block 13. More restrained in style with a very fine structure, it has a real dimension and quality to its dark cherry fruit. The Delara comes from best block on the property with the oldest vines. Ageing is in French oak (50% new) and offers up very rich dark fruit, a silky supple texture and impressive intensity. (DM)
