Meteor Vineyard Napa Valley
One of the latest in a long line of cult wines, no expense has been spared by Barry Schuler, the ex-CEO of AOL, to realise his dream of making world class Cabernet Sauvignon. Teaming up in partnership with Bill and Dawnine DYER, one of Napa Valley’s leading husband and wife winemaking teams, they have produced a wine of outstanding quality with their first release from the 2005 vintage. With the vineyard being located in an ideal growing climate, 500 feet above sea level and planted with three selected Cabernet Sauvignon clones not long after the Schulers bought it in 1999, the quality of the fruit produced on its white volcanic soil was soon recognised by some of Napa’s top wine producers who purchased fruit from the Schulers. Recognising that the fruit was of outstanding quality, they decided to make a small amount of wine solely from this vineyard under their own label. Like many great wines of the world, there is a cool climate elegance combined with lush, ripe fruit, giving it a seamless balance and a long, lingering finish. Quite remarkable for vines which are barely over a decade old. Only around 700 cases are made with a further 90 cases of Special Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Of course, these wines are not cheap, the Special Family Reserve being well off the radar of our most expensive price category; and whilst the wine is approachable now it may be better to buy it sooner rather than later – it’s certainly going to be drinking well into the next decade or more and it won’t get any cheaper.
