This is a large producer with an extensive range of estate-grown and externally sourced wines. A decent and approachable range of fruit driven wines is produced under the Classic Series and Twins labels but the best are available under the Montes Alpha label and there are a number of other special bottlings. Chardonnay is in a rich tropical style but has a little finesse, while Cabernet Sauvignon is sound if a little light on occasion. However, it is the Montes Alpha reds, premium Montes Folly and premium Montes Alpha M that really stand out. The dark, smoky Syrah is one of Chile’s best examples. Now added to this is the special Montes Folly bottling from the firm’s Apalta Mountain Estate in Colchagua, a hand-picked 100% Syrah aged in new French oak, of which less than 1,000 cases are produced. The flagship Montes Alpha M, a Bordeaux blend from the single La Finca estate in Colchagua, is rich, earthy, extracted and concentrated. These two premium reds have now been joined by a Carmenère, Purple Angel which is blended with a little Petit Verdot. A late harvest white is also now offered, a blend of 50/50 Gewürztraminer and Riesling. (DM)
