Morgan Winery Monterey County
Small to medium-sized warehouse winery. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah are mainly sourced from the Santa Lucia Highlands and Monterey with a small amount of Chardonnay also coming from Arroyo Seco. These are first-class sources for the Burgundy varieties. Pinot Noirs come from Rosella’s, Double L, Tondre Grapefield and Gary’s vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands and are a step up from the regular bottling. Chardonnays from two different vineyards – Double L and McIntyre – have replaced the Reserve bottling. The Syrah G17 is classy in a cooler, spicier style with a touch of Grenache and Tempranillo included and there are additional examples from the Double L Vineyard and a Santa Lucia Highlands vineyards blend Tierra Mar. Look out also for a southern Rhône-style Côtes du Crow’s, a blend of Syrah and Grenache. The cool-grown Monterey Sauvignon Blanc is good value, full and ripe with a hint of Alexander Valley fruit adding complexity. It is part barrel-fermented. An additional and well priced range of approachable wines has also been added under the Lee Familly Farm umbrella. These include Grenache, Tempranillo and a Portuguese style red blend Rio Tinto as well as a rosé and whites from Albarino and Torrontes. Most of the wines will drink well young; the single-vineyard bottlings will stand a little age. (DM)
