Municipal Winemakers Santa Barbara County
Although a native Californian, Dave Potter spent his formative winemaking years in Australia, graduating at Curtin University in Margaret River and working for Fosters on a number of their leading brands, as well as stints at HENSCHKE in the Barossa Valley, Ch. de Montfaucon in the Rhône Valley and Fess PARKER in his native Santa Barbara County. His Australian experience has led him to a down to earth philosophy about what his wines should be and where they stand in the market place which gives them an outstanding quality/price ratio. He makes a Kabinett style Riesling, labelled Bright White, reminiscent of a Riesling from the Clare Valley in South Australia – citrussy and aromatic with a little steeliness underneath. The redcurrant scented Bright Red (Grenache/Cinsault/Counoise and Syrah) is more a food wine that a show wine. An increasing and diverse range of wines are now being made and its worth checking out the winery website for full details. At the pricier end these include a Kick On Riesling, a Grenache from the Fox Family Vineyard and a Pinot Noir, Rita’s Crown from the highest slopes in the Sta. Rita Hills. (NB)
