Novy Family Wines Russian River Valley
Novy was recently purchased by KJ, having been run by Adam and Dianna Lee of Siduri and Dianna’s family, the Novys. The wines which are dominated by Rhône styles, including a Russian River Viognier, are made at the Siduri facility in Santa Rosa. The intention is for Siduri to remain focussed on Pinot Noir while Novy also produce Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, unusual varietal Pinot Meunier and a Pinot Noir vinified as a white, both from the Van der Kamp Vineyard as well as a Four Mile Creek Red Table Wine which is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Zinfandel. Grenache comes from the Judge Family Vineyard and is rich and full with dark and spicy fruit and a touch of firm tannin gives the wine backbone. Ageing is in neutral French oak.
As well as a lighter Russian River Syrah, there is also a bottling from the Judge Family site which is richer and fuller with spicy dark pepper underpinning its fruit. Gary’s Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands has been a source of very opulent, dark, almost jammy, chocolatey Syrah, while the Rosella’s Vineyard example now stands out for its depth, structure and a fine intensity and minerality which underpins its licorice and black pepper character. It is clearly the benchmark wine of the range. While both the fruit sources and the wines change to some degree from year to year, high quality is maintained. Vineyard sources are expected to remain the same. (DM)
