Pax Wine Cellars Russian River Valley
After a period of ownership disputes it is good that this very impressive warehouse winery is continuing to produce some of the best small-lot Syrah, Grenache and Rhône blends in California. The wines are characterised by ripe, opulent, full-blown dark fruit, loads of depth and concentration, and marvellous varietal purity throughout. There is also a further Syrah which is a blend of Alder Springs, Castelli-Knight and Griffins Lair. The Castelli-Knight is markedly opulent and laden with dark spicy fruit while the Griffins Lair shows a dark, brambly, tarry character. The Alder Springs stands out for its depth, grip and power as well as an impressive array of dark fruits. The small range is completed by a Grenache from the James Berry Vineyard in Paso Robles and there is a blend, The Vicar which is comprised of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah and is the winery ode to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. While these exciting wines are certainly high in alcohol they are also finely balanced. (DM)
