Peter Michael Winery Knights Valley
Sir Peter Michael’s Knights Valley winery has, for nearly three decades, been producing very fine cool climate wines, with mountain vineyard sources a key element. The Chardonnay cuvées are all very impressive with a combination of rich, ripe, honeyed fruit and deftly handled oak. The combination of different clones, native yeast fermentation and careful selection in the vineyard and cellar all contribute and the wines have been increasing in both subtlety and complexity. As well as the vineyard releases, there are two Barrel Selection Cuvées: Cuvée Indigene and Point Rouge which is a winemaker selection from the very best barrels of the vintage. Sauvignon Blanc Les Après-Midi is stylish and not dissimilar to top white Graves – it is barrel-fermented with lees-ageing and bâtonnage but is tight and structured with a mineral restraint. Coeur à Coeur, is by contrast a blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon. The Moulin Rouge Pinot is a more recent addition from the famed Pisoni Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands and there are three other Pinot releases from the Seaview Estate vineyard on the Sonoma Coast. The top red, Les Pavots, is from the vineyard of the same name and is a dark, brooding blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It is among the finest Bordeaux blends in California and requires a minimum of 6–7 years’ age to show at its best. Two other Bordeaux styles are also made. Au Paradis is a blend of the two Cabernets from Oakville, L’Esprit des Pavots comes from younger vines on the Les Pavots site. (DM)
