Pride Mountain Vineyards Spring Mountain
The late Jim Pride established Pride Mountain as one of the finest sources of great Napa red and his family will continue this tradition. The vineyards here are characterised by a southerly exposure as well as mountain, volcanic and sandstone soils with a very high stone and gravel content, providing exceptional drainage. Quality is then emphasised with careful canopy management. There are 32 ha (80 acres) under vine planted to the key Bordeaux red varieties as well as Syrah, Sangiovese, Chardonnay and Viognier. The beautifully poised and balanced Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% varietal and offers a level of depth and finesse rarely achieved for the variety in the Napa. It would be a waste to broach before 7 or 8 years of age. Vintner Select versions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay have been added to the small range. The top wines here – both very pricey and very scarce – are the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and the Reserve Claret, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with a little Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. These are made in tiny quantities and kept only for the winery’s very best customers. Best to visit or join the mailing list. (DM)
