Quinta de Soalheiro Vinho Verde
Located in Melgaço, Vinho Verde’s warmest, driest sub-region, production at Soalheiro is focused on Alvarinho, known as Albarino in neighbouring Galicia, Spain. It is Vinho Verde’s star variety and Soalheiro are one of its finest exponents. Antonio Cerdeira illegally planted 4 ha of Alvarinho in 1974 and, following changes in the law, released his first Alvarinho in 1982. Today his daughter, Maria tends the estate’s 10 ha of organically certified vines, while her brother Luis makes the wines. The classic is aromatic with lingering fruit salad flavours in its youth. A vertical tasting back to 1995 provided ample demonstration of its potential to age – like a Riesling, it retained its acidity while developing complex, weightier toast, lime, lemon cordial and butter flavours. The flagship Soalheiro Reserva is fermented in oak, but the wine to seek out is Soalheiro Primeiras Vinhas, an old vine selection with a small percentage of barrel-fermented fruit. It shows remarkable concentration, complexity and length without losing the region’s trademark levity. Primeiras Vinhas is made with input from Dirk NIEPOORT. Luis in turn has a hand in Niepoort Gira Sol Vinho Verde, which is made from the Loureiro grape. (SA)
