Quinta do Passadouro Douro & Port
Owned by the Bohrmann family since 1991 and now in partnership with winemaker Jorge Serôdio Borges of PINTAS who had already established a track record under Niepoort management. This superb quinta in the Pinhão Valley includes 18 ha of vineyards, in part planted to old vines including some Sousão. The estate’s old vine fruit is now augmented with fruit from a new 20 ha vineyard of south-facing 25-30 year old block planted vines at Quinta do Sibio in the Roncao Valley. Yields are low and the grapes are foot-trodden in stone lagares before 18 months in French barriques. The wine has become increasingly stylish, expressive and complex with successive vintages, with black fruits, spice, clove and floral characters that become more savoury with 5 years’ age or more. A superb old-vines Reserva is also made, it is very concentrated with intense, sweet fruit and has excellent balance; its youthful black olive, truffle, earth and preserved black fruits character should give still more with 10 years’ age. New from 04 is ‘Passa’ a more moderately priced version from young vines that offers good value if needing some 5-6 years’ to show at its best. Port has been a fine single-quinta example and there is now an LBV also. In 2008, Passadouro released its first white, made from bought-in grapes.
