Quinta do Vale Doña Maria Port & Douro
Cristiano van Zeller’s family once owned QUINTA DO NOVAL but now he is involved in some capacity in the production, direction or distribution of several Douro estates as well as one or two from further afield. The 10 ha vineyard of Vale Doña Maria (in his wife’s family for generations) on the Rio Torto is an old-fashioned, mixed planting, with many of the vines 50–60 years old. Grapes are foot-trodden in lagares, for a rich, fleshy, characterful and seductive red. Also produced in most vintages is an increasingly fine Vintage Port. Both are made by Sandra Tavares da Silva (PINTAS) with some input from Francisco Olazabal of QUINTA DO VALE MEÃO. The VZ negociant label includes an excellent if ambitiously priced Graves-like white. Cristiano van Zeller also has a joint venture with Domingos Soares Franco (see José Maria da FONSECA), producing both a Vintage Port and Domini table wines from properties in the Douro Superior (Alto Douro). CV a richly concentrated yet elegantly drawn red from older vineyards on north, northwest and west-facing vineyards opposite do Vale Do. Maria is produced in conjunction with Pintas. The characterful, supple Casa de Casal de Loivos red is also produced by Lemos & Van Zeller.
