Qupé Wines Santa Maria Valley

qupeOne of the first and still one of the finest of the California Rhône Rangers, Bob Lindquist’s winery has recently been purchased by Charles Banks and his Terroirs Selections operation which owns MAYACAMAS in the Napa and MULDERBOSCH and other operations in South Africa. Lindquist shares winemaking facilities and a similar vision with Jim Clendenen at AU BON CLIMAT. The wines here are of a uniformly high standard; both reds and whites are subtle and elegant and very well crafted. The Bien Nacido Vineyard is the main source of fruit but Lindquist also farms the Ibarra-Young Vineyard on biodynamic principles and has established his own Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard in the Edna Valley from which Viognier and Marsanne as well as Syrah and Grenache are now being released. The white Bien Nacido Cuvée blends Chardonnay and Viognier. The fresh and forward, black fruited Maxtap Cuvée is a combination of Syrah, Grenache, Tempranillo and Mourvèdre. Richer and more serious is the Los Olivos Cuvée a Rhône blend of Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache. There are a couple of Bien Nacido Syrahs, the Hillside Estate often of 5-star quality, as well as a regular Central Coast bottling which is lighter and quite peppery. Recent Syrah additions to the range now include bottlings from Stolpman, Alisos and Purisima Mountain vineyards. A barrel selection Syrah “Sonnies” (£F) is also now made from the Sawyer Lindquist property and only in exceptional vintages comes a Syrah Bien Nacido X Block which is pretty pricey compared with the rest of the range (£G). The whites should be broached relatively young; the top reds will evolve very well over 5 or 6 years. (DM)
