Raats Wines Stellenbosch
This small estate which focusses on Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc is run by Bruwer Raats and his wife Janice. Chenin Blanc is the most important variety here and considerable effort has gone into sourcing older low-yielding vineyards on the most propritious soils. On average the vines are over 25 years old and found at an altitude of over 250 metres, helping to promote natural acidity in the wines. The Original Chenin Blanc is the most approachable. It is harvested in different pickings from a range of soil types and is cool fermented in stainless steel. Greengage and ripe tropical notes are evident along with a fine mineral undercurrent. The Stellenbosch Chenin is richer and fuller coming from older vines, over 40 years and gets a proportion of the wine vinified and aged in oak. That mineral undercurrent is again present here. The Cabernet Franc is in a rich and ripe style with evident black fruits, it comes from unirrigated bush vines grown on decomposed granite. Ageing is for 14 months in one-third new French oak and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered. A more approachable Cabernet Franc, Dolomite is also made as well as a red blend Jasper, comprising a majority of Cabernet Franc with Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Produced in very small volume is the super premium red Mvemve Raats de Compostella, a blend of the Cabernets, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Merlot. It is a wine of really impressive dimension. (DM)
