Renwood Winery Amador County
The Italian and Rhône-style wines here are all impressive but it is the great Zinfandels from old bush vines that really stand out. Renwood’s vineyards are planted at altitude, generally well over 300m (1,000ft) above sea level, and the warm days and cool summer evenings enable good structure and acidity to be built up in the fruit. The top Zinfandels, including the Grandpere, are what super-ripe, concentrated old-vine Zinfandel is all about. Other premium releases include Merida, Flutist and Musicians Zins. Good-value can be found in the Premier Old Vine example and fresh fruit-driven styles with the California and BBQ labels. As well as the Zinfandels, good quality Barbera and Syrah are made and other reds also include Tempranillo, Primitivo and a Zinfandel and Syrah blend, Clarion. In general the wines should be drunk fairly young but the top Zinfandels will add further complexity with a little age. Among the small range of whites are Viognier, a Sauvignon Blanc and the White Wine which blends Vermentino with Sauvignon. (DM)
