Rex Hill Winery Chehalem Mountains
The four partners at A to Z Wineworks purchased this operation in 2007. With 23 ha (56 acres) of owned vineyards (Estate and Jacob-Hart) planted almost exclusively to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and sourcing fruit from elsewhere this winery has consistently produced first-class wines and in particular, Pinot Noir from a number of sites. There is a good regular Willamette Valley bottling and a very consistent Reserve. The partners believe that as yet only a limited number of vineyard sites have yet proved themselves in the longer term and quality can be achieved as much with a varied range of fruit sources as much as single sites. The Reserve and Jacob-Hart vineyard examples possess that extra dimension. While reasonably pricey, they are not excessively so. Of equal interest is a very good Pinot Gris from the Jacob-Hart Vineyard as well as a richly textured, creamy Chardonnay from the Willamette Valley. (DM)
