RN Estate Vineyard Paso Robles
French émigré and hotelier Roger Nicolas released his first vintage here in 2005. Specialising in Rhône and Bordeaux varietals from his own vineyard, he also produces a little Pinot Noir which he buys in. One could say that a Gallic influence prevails, for the wines are uniformly balanced with a great deal of finesse. Pinot Noir from the Fiddlestix Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills has deep colour, supple tannin with good fruit and body. A second and marginally more expensive example comes from the Solomon Hills Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley. East Knoll Cuvée is a blend of Syrah and Zinfandel which are fermented together for 20 months in French and American barrels. Although approaching 14% abv, the wine is surprisingly light, but elegant – probably one to drink young. Cuvée des Artistes is Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and now a touch of Petit Verdot– it’s elegant, too. His top blend is a classic Bordeaux style, Harmonie des Cépages combining Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot aged for 20 months in French oak, this wine is supple, fruity and elegant with lovely complexity, good length and an explosion of black fruit. It is to be noted that Roger is really a small producer with around 120 to 250 cases of the reds made each year. (NB)
