Robert Biale Vineyards Napa Valley
This operation has owned vineyards in the Napa Valley for decades but more recently they have established themselves as a very impressive small producer of mainly old-vine Zinfandel from a range of sources including their home vineyard, along with Petite Sirah and a Barbera and Sangiovese. The Hill Climber label has also offered some brilliantly concentrated Syrahs. The key to quality here is tight control of yields both in their own vineyards and through working closely with the small growers who also supply grapes. With so much California Zin now massively extracted and overblown, these examples show remarkable refinement and balance. This is artisan California winegrowing at its best. The Zins will drink very well young as well as aging gracefully, while the Petite Sirah and Hill Climber wines need five or six years and will keep very well. (DM)
