Robert Craig (Napa Valley)
Small, very high-quality Napa operation established in 1992 and sourcing fruit from a number of locations. Affinity is a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Ripe, supple and surprisingly elegant it can be approached relatively young. For Napa it is a brilliant value. The three Cabernets are equally stylish, but have a denser, firmer edge. They require a little more time to tame their mountain tannins but they are more approachable than many. The Howell Mountain is particularly fine with elegant, dark cedary fruit and a pure mineral edge. The spicy Zinfandel is a rich, vibrant, dark-fruit style but has a nice fresh underlying acidity. The Chardonnay doesn’t quite have the intensity of the reds but nevertheless has a good, rich texture with ripe citrus fruit and a subtle tropical character. The wine gets additional depth from 60% barrelfermentation, although the fruit is to the fore with a minimum of new oak. Drink the reds over three to ten years. A well priced fruit forward blend Mt George Cuvée (£D) blends Cabernet and Merlot and a rosé La Fleur is also made. (DM)
