Robert Mondavi Winery Oakville
Arguably the most famous wine name in California now purchased by Constellation Brands. The late Robert Mondavi must take much of the credit for the positive public face of California wine when it re-emerged as a quality region in the 1970s. The company has very widespread wine interests in California although most overseas investments and partnerships have now been sold. In addition to the large-scale premium operation at Oakville Mondavi also owns the Woodbridge winery facility in the Central Valley which produces straightforward everyday reds and whites. The BYRON winery on the Central Coast has been a Mondavi label for some years and the prestigious ARROWOOD operation in Sonoma is also owned. OPUS ONE was the first of the Mondavi winery partnerships, established in 1979 with MOUTON ROTHSCHILD. The core of the Oakville operation, though, is the firm’s premium wines and Cabernet has always been exceptional. The Reserve comes mainly from the great To Kalon vineyard and a second release solely from To Kalon is also now offerred. The wines are either classified as Napa or other district bottlings as well as Reserves. Fumé Blanc as a style has always been successful here and an additional special bottling is now offerred from the very lowyielding I Block on the To Kalon vineyard, planted in 1945 and believed to be the oldest in North America.
