Rust En Vrede Wine Estate Stellenbosch
Jean Engelbrecht now has increasing premium interests in the Cape winelands having taken over this historic farm in 1978. He has established a partnership with golfing superstar Ernie Els at ERNIE ELS and at GUARDIAN PEAK. Ernie Els winemaker, Coenie Snyman is in charge of vinification here also. Rust en Vrede itself was established in 1694 and is one of the very oldest wine farms. The vineyards located to the south of Stellenbosch have a spectacular backdrop looking across to the Helderberg mountains. This is a red only property producing Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, an Estate blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot, a new and entirely more opulent Syrah label and one of the Capes most expensive new reds the rich and concentrated 1694, a blend of Syrah and Cabernet. All the wines are more opulent than many others from the Cape. Some of the overtly minty character found elsewhere is absent here. While the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz varietal bottlings are impressively dense and concentrated, the Estate Red, along with the new labelled Syrah and 1694 are a clear step up. While all the wines will all evolve nicely in the medium term, the top three will continue to add complexity with up to 10 years’ ageing. (DM)
