Sanford Winery Sta. Rita Hills
Located in the cool Sta. Rita Hills, Sanford produces good to very good Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Richard Sanford has now sold his interest so it remains to be seen how quality will emerge in the longer term. One of the key assets here is the great Sanford and Benedict Vineyard, from which a number of winemakers have crafted some of the finest examples of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to have emerged from California. Pinot Noir bottlings, particularly La Rinconada and a couple of premium labels from the same vineyard, Vista Al Rio and Dominio Del Falcon, are laden with intense berry fruit and well-judged oak. Chardonnay is in a ripe tropical style, with plenty of wood. (DM)
