Saxum Vineyards Paso Robles
This recently established Rhône style specialist has rapidly emerged as an icon producer among the new wave of Paso Robles. Syrah is the leading variety with the varietal Bone Rock. There are also four Rhône style blends: Broken Stones, James Berry, Heartstone and Terry Hoage vineyards from a varying mix of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Counoise. The recently added Paderewrski Vineyard red combines Zinfandel with Mourvèdre, Tempranillo and Petite Sirah. The Syrah Bone Rock comes from his family’s James Berry vineyard. Broken Stones is in fact mainly Syrah with the balance Grenache, Mourvèdre and a small proportion of Petite Sirah. The fruit is sourced not only from the home James Berry vineyard but also from the Denner and Heartstone vineyards. A small winery has now been established, the wines were originally produced at the now closed Garretson facility. All the vineyard sources for the wines are located on the Westside of Paso Robles and offer fruit of brilliant intensity and depth. The approach in the winery is as one would expect, very minimalist, with low sulphur levels and the wines are kept on their fine lees. Despite alcohol levels often over 15% all the wines retain an excellent balance and purity in much the same way as the great traditional reds from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Rich, spicy black pepper fruits, with a hint of minerality and real depth mark the wines. Expect all to develop very well over five to seven years and keep considerably longer. Auction prices are now stupendous. (DM)
