Sea Smoke Cellars Sta. Rita Hills
Newly established operation with some spectacularly sited vineyards in the western Sta. Rita Hills to the north of the Santa Ynez river overlooking the Sanford and Benedict and Fiddlestix sites and planted on south facing bluffs. Pinot Noir comes in three guises and these are some of the best examples from the area. They are produced solely from the Sea Smoke property, which is rare for the region. In the winery a cold soak is employed for all the fruit and all three wines are bottled unfiltered. The Botella version is ripe and forward, a selection across the various blocks of the property. The Southing is richer and fuller with firmer tannins and an impressively intense mineral undercurrent. More new wood is used (around 65%) although in many respects this is more successful than Ten, the fullest and densest example with formidable concentration, which is aged in 100% new wood after a longer vatting of up to a month. Expect the top two wines to develop well for up to a decade. Most recently added are Sea Spray a Blancs de Noirs sparkler and Streamside a premium Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay. (DM)
