Sherwin Family Vineyards Spring Mountain
Small Spring Mountain property 600m (2,000ft) above sea level producing a top-class Cabernet Sauvignon. The 6 ha (15 acres) of vineyards are also planted to a little Merlot and Cabernet Franc to add complexity. Yields are kept tightly in check and cover crops not only protect the mountain soils but also aid ripening. Production is currently less than 2,000 cases a year with a ceiling of around 2,500 cases with a new gravity- flow winery that they hope to lift the wine to a new level. Ageing is in 100% new oak, seamlessly integrated with the rich and concentrated dark berry-laden fruit. Give it at least 5 years. As well as the grand vin a Syrah is released from the Dry Creek Valley, Cellar Scraps is a mixed blend red and a Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is also made. A small volume of a further red Patriotic Pour is made in aid of the families of the victims of the September 11 attack on New York with bottles donated to charity and available at the winery. Finally a further Cabernet Sauvignon, Cobalt is made from mountain fruit in association the Cobalt boat building company. (DM)
