Spottswoode Wine Estate St Helena
This historic estate was originally established in 1882 and comprises a lavish Victorian farmhouse and a modern winery constructed in 1999. The estate has 15 ha (37 acres) planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the latter just a single hectare (2.5 acres). The Cabernet is sourced fully from estate fruit, with a small component of Cabernet Franc in the blend. It is a deep, finely structured wine, with refined tannins and great ageing potential. The Sauvignon, sourced from estate fruit as well as vineyards in Napa and Sonoma Counties, is in a quintessentially California style: part barrel-fermented with lees-enrichment which is ripe, stylish and long. Small amounts of a second Cabernet Lindenhurst and a Syrah, Field Book are also made. (DM)
