Staglin Family Vineyard Rutherford
The Staglins founded their small winery in 1985 with 20 ha (50 acres) of vineyard which had originally been a source for André Tschelistcheff when blending his legendary vintages of the BEAULIEU VINEYARDS Private Reserve Georges de la Tour Cabernet. Production now runs at just under 10,000 cases a year, the majority Cabernet Sauvignon, with just a few hundred cases of a Sangiovese Stagliano as well as Chardonnay. The estate Chardonnay and Cabernet are both very impressive. A second label Salus is now released to ensure the integrity of the estate wines. Although the Salus wines are lighter and more obviously fruit-driven, all the wines are marked by their weight, rich texture and extract. The Rutherford bottlings achieve this with ease and the Cabernet Sauvignon in particular is very refined. Both reds and whites will age well, the Rutherford Cabernet requiring 5 years or so. (DM)
