Stangeland Vineyards Eola-Amity Hills
The vineyards at this estate are to be found just to the north of Salem and gain the maximum light exposure from the sun, picking up its benefit from early morning. The property, located on a hilltop with a south facing aspect, was originally planted in 1978 to a combination of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. The developing age of the vineyards is beginning to show through in the quality of the wines and a number of other growers also supply fruit. Pinot Noir is the main focus and a broad range of wines is produced. The Estate example is in an attractive dark fruit style. The top two Pinots are impressively dense, structured and intense, with the Winemakers Estate Reserve offering additional mineral depth and persistence. Both will benefit from three or four year’s patience. The unusual and fascinating Chardonnay Decadence is an ice-wine style with the late-harvest fruit frozen and concentrated leaving a sweet and unctuous richness. The dry whites are all very well priced. The Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer are in a very crisp and elegant Alsatian style, the Chardonnay restrained and citrusy gaining additional structure from 11 months barrel-fermentation and ageing.
