Stonyridge Vineyard Waiheke Island
Stephen White’s small north-facing vineyard is managed along organic lines and produces what is deservedly the most famous wine from Waiheke Island. The stated aim is to produce the best Bordeaux-style red in the world. Nonetheless it is very much a lifestyle-oriented project with the pleasures of sun and sea woven into its otherwise serious pursuit. Made since 1987, Larose Cabernets is a blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with lesser amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Aided by naturally low fertility, the fruit quality owes much to meticulous vineyard care, resulting in yields typically around 25 hl/ha. The grapes are then transformed into a rich but harmonious blend of new oak and intense berry fruit with impressive ripeness, depth and balance. The fruit intensity holds up well with age though there is perhaps not quite the mellowed evolution in the structure that would be seen in a northern hemisphere red of similar quality. Optimum drinking therefore is probably between 3 and 6 years of age, though they will keep for much longer. As well as Larose, a Syrah/Mourvèdre/Grenache blend Pilgrim, a Malbec Luna Negra as well as a second wine, Airfield are also made.
