Storybook Mountain Wines Napa Valley
This is a Zinfandel-only winery and a very good one, located on the red clay and loam slopes of the Mayacamas. The estate vineyards surrounding the property were originally planted in the 1880s and these hillside plots continue to show the potential of the variety. Insecticides and herbicides are avoided and the wine is vinified and aged in century-old caves which provide an ideal environment with even year-round temperatures and just the right level of humidity. A combination of French, American and Hungarian oak is used to age the wines. They are full-bodied and structured, tight and firm in their youth but with the kind of cellaring potential the variety very often lacks. A top estate reserve is regularly produced with an occasional limited-production, special vintage selection Eastern Exposures which has a small amount (less than 5%) of Viognier to add fragrance. Understandably pricier Seps Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, including a Reserve and Antaeus a blend of Zin and the Bordeaux varieties as well as a Viognier and two rosés complete the small range. (DM)
