Summer Wood Winery Paso Robles
This relatively small winery includes a luxurious four star small guest house on its Paso Robles Westside estate which would make a good base for exploring the area. The vast majority of the winery’s output is sold through the tasting room and via their mailing list. Rhône styles are particularly exciting here and include both Syrah and Viognier. Zinfandel is also produced as is Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate has 19 ha (46 acres) under vine and fruit is sourced from home as well as other Paso Robles vineyards. The Syrah is sourced from three separate vineyards and is aged in 40% new wood. The impressively concentrated Diosa red is domainated by Syrah and comes from among others the highly rated Denner Vineyard. Ageing is in a mix of French, Hungarian and a little American oak. The Diosa Blanc is a blend of Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier, the Roussanne giving a really spicy, citrus and lightly nutty edge to the fruit. It enjoys a long cool fermentation and as such should be enjoyed in its relative youth. Both reds will stand a little age. Recent developments have seen single vineyard Syrah and Marsanne from the Alta Colina site added as well as two super-premium reds, the Reserve Cabernet and Sentio labels. Grenache, Grenache Blanc, Viognier and a GSM red blend are also produced. (DM)
