Swanson Vineyards Rutherford
Impressive and stylish wines are produced at this family-run Napa winery established in 1985. Although production is not small quality has remained good to very good. As well as the three principal releases, Sangiovese, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, super premium Face Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and two late harvest whites have been produced in recent vintages. Crespicule is from Sémillon while Tardif comes from Chardonnay. Neither is cheap (£H). Merlot has been made since the winery was founded; it is crafted in a medium-full, supple style with an emphasis on ripe, forward, plummy fruit and well-judged oak. The premium Alexis blends mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot now from the estate Oakville Gold Coast Vineyard. The style is modern with an extending vatting of around four weeks and malolactic in barrel. The wine is ripe and supple with quite marked background oak spice. Give it 4–5 years. (DM)
