Tantara Winery Santa Maria Valley

tantaraThe Fink and Cates partnership is responsible for a classy Chardonnay and some of the best Pinot to emerge from the Central Coast. Cadence Chardonnay is produced in an opulently tropical style, with a marked citrus undercurrent. A number of single-vineyard bottlings have also been made which offered real depth and style, with a mineral undercurrent and impressive structure. Of the Pinots, the regular Santa Maria bottling is soft, ripe and forward. Of the single-vineyard wines the Santa Maria-sourced Solomon Hills Ranch is rich and showy with loads of dark and spicy fruit; the Dierberg, similarly rich, offers greater depth and dimension from very low yields. The Bien Nacido Adobe is sourced from four separate plots and is surprisingly tight and structured. Typically elegant, piercing and very intense dark fruit is apparent in the Sta. Rita Hills-sourced Rio Vista Vineyard. Two top wines stand out. Evelyn, a homage to Bill Cates’ mother produced in minute quantities, is sourced from a number of Santa Maria sites and is loaded with sweet and opulent fruit. In complete contrast, the Pisoni bottling is less exotic, more restrained, but offers remarkable depth and purity. Additional Pinot vineyard sources now include the Bien Nacido Corral blocks, Tondre Grapefield in the Santa Lucia Highlands, La Colline in the Arroyo Grande Valley and from 2012 from the Zotovich Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills. Carousal Blanc de Blancs and Blanc de Noirs sparklers were also made in the 2009 vintage. Give all of the wines 2 or 3 years; the Pisoni Vineyard in particular need 4–5 years to evolve.
