Tercero Wines Santa Barbara County
Larry Schaffer is the oenologist at Fess PARKER Vineyards but finds a little time to do his own thing as well. Specialising in Rhône red and white varietals, he also produces a notable Gewürztraminer, The Outlier. With typical lychee aromas, one would expect a much sweeter wine than the full, unctuous dry style produced here. Balanced alcohol making it quite food-friendly too. Camp 4 and Larner Vineyards Mourvèdre is meaty, spicy and deep with hints of leather and violets, whilst his “Cuvée Christie” (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Petite Sirah) has all the complex spice, leather and garrigue that one would expect from such a blend. A barrel sample of Grenache from the cool-climate Watch Hill Vineyard also showed a great deal of promise on tasting. (NB)
