Terry Hoage Vineyards Paso Robles
This small bespoke winery is fast becoming one of the best sources of characterful, opulent Rhône styled reds from the Paso Robles AVA. The winery and vineyards are located in the western hills of the appellation, with vines planted on steep slopes and in some of the regions most propitious limestone soils. Dark, smoky and characterful Syrah is aged in 90% new French oak offering a pronounced toasty undercurrent but it in no way overwhelms the rich concentration of the wine’s fruit. The Grenache and Syrah “The 46” blend has less new oak, and the wine is more obviously fruit driven with rich and ripe blackberry fruit in abundance. The Pick is a classic southern Rhône blend comprising Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Counoise. As such there is less oak influence and the wine is characterised not just by dark, spicy fruit but also a subtle herb-scented character. Other reds to consider are a pure Grenache Skins, 5 Blocks a blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache and Cinsault as well as a second Syrah Three-Four. The range is completed by a white The Gap comprising Grenache Blanc, Picpoul and Roussanne. The reds will drink well with a year or two of ageing, although Syrah may benefit from a little more patience than will the blends. (DM)
