Vergelegen Wines Stellenbosch
This historic wine farm dates back to 1700 and is located on hillside vineyards south of Stellenbosch. The winery was designed by French architects but it more closely resembles a new-wave Napa Valley operation than anything else. Gravity plays an important role in cellar-handling operations. André van Rensburg took on the winemaking mantle here after Martin MEINERT moved on to produce his own label. Varietal Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are both impressive, particularly the Reserves, which have real structure and grip. Premium label Shiraz and Cabernet Merlot are good while the Reserve reds are a step up. Merlot is ripe and vibrant and contains a little of both Cabernets. Cabernet Sauvignon has a hint of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, while the Vergelegen Red is one of the better reds yet from the Cape. Shiraz has now been added to the range and is impressively refined and stylish. A white Bordeaux style blend, Vergelegen White promises much while a super premium red Vergelegen V now takes South African wines to both new heights of quality and price. (DM)
