Viña Altair CachapoalThis is a new joint venture between the Dassault family of Château DASSAULT in Saint-Emilion and Guillermo Luksic who owns VIÑA SAN PEDRO. Just two premium reds are made with the first vintage of both in 2002. The vineyards are in the Upper Cachapoal, one of the cooler areas of the country, nestled into the foothills of the Andes. There is a marked variation in day and night temperatures here along with natural cooling breezes, all of which contributes to the acidity in the fruit and improving the natural structure of the wines. Sideral is effectively the second wine but is sourced from other vineyards as well as estate fruit. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. As with the top wine, fermentation is in wooden vats and ageing is in some new oak. It is supple and approachable, if a touch leafy and peppery, and is made for immediate drinking altough it will develop well in the medium term. Altaïr is more serious and is impressively structured and concentrated. Blended from Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, this comes solely from estate fruit. Expect it to develop well over a decade. (DM)
