Viña Casablanca Casablanca
Established by SANTA CAROLINA well over 10 years ago this has been a consistently impressive producer of good, sometimes very good cool-grown whites. Reds are produced as well and these wines are mostly now vinified from warmer growing areas. There is a fairly wide range of wines produced under the Céfiro label and a number of superior El Bosque and Nimbus wines which have a touch more depth. The top red is the Neblus, a pricey blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carmenère which comes from Casablanca Valley fruit. Gewürztraminer is good, with some varietally pungent character; Sauvignon Blanc is equally stylish, with grassy, tropical notes showing through its piercing fruit. Chardonnay is among the better examples in the country, particularly the barrel fermented EL Bosque, which is very intense with marked citrus and subtle lees and oak character. It will develop well with limited ageing. (DM)
