Vineyard 29 (St Helena)
The McMinns state of the art winery at their Vineyard 29 site just to the north of St Helena is where they vinify their top wine, a Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as a Bordeaux red blend and a Zinfandel from the potentially great Aida Vineyard which they purchased from Oliver and Karen Caldwell of OLIVER CALDWELL in 2001. Found two miles to the north of Vineyard 29, Aida is warmer but is moderated by afternoon breezes. Both properties are looked after by vineyard specialist David ABREU. The Aida Zinfandel is in the very ripe and berry laden style spectrum but with a subtle minerality. The Aida Red is big, rich and opulent; dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with just over a third Merlot, malolactic is in barrel and the wine aged in 100% new French oak for 18 months. The Vineyard 29 Cabernet comes from estate vineyards planted in the lower eastern facing Mayacamas slopes just above Highway 29, hence the name of the property. The site benefits from good early morning sunlight and avoids the excessive heat of the afternoons here. Dark fruit, cedar and oak spice are all apparent although the wine possesses an impressive mineral elegance as well. The top two reds will develop very well in bottle. A Cabernet Franc and a Sauvignon Blanc are also now made from the Vineyard 29 estate blocks and a second Cru label includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Pinot Noir and a Sauvignon Blanc. (DM)
