Weingut von Hövel Saar
One of the Saar’s long-established estates (11 ha), von Hövel is of monastic origins. Most wines come from the excellent Scharzhofberg or Oberemmeler Hütte sites – the latter is an Alleinbesitz (sole ownership). The wines (100% Riesling) have long been good but have sometimes been too marked by sulphur or other ‘off ’ odours. However this seems much less of a problem than previously and there is real intensity to the fruit from a lemony Kabinett to nectarine in the riper styles. There is a pure, racy quality to the Scharzhofberger Auslese and terrific intensity allied to excellent definition in the supremely pure, intense, long and honeyed Lange Goldkapsel Oberemeler Hütte. Even the light, basic, off-dry QbA is well balanced with surprising length of flavour.
