Westerly Vineyards Santa Maria Valley
Some impressive wines are produced here, particularly from the Bordeaux red varieties. The vineyards are located in the newly established Happy Canyon AVA, notable for success with the Bordeaux grapes. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are sourced from the cooler Sta. Rita Hills. The Sauvignon Blanc, which includes a little Sémillon, is vinified in stainless steel and neutral oak and the malolactic is blocked to retain freshness. It is subtly tropical, with a gooseberry and mineral undercurrent. A similarly priced Fletcher White is also made which includes a touch of Viognier with Sauvignon Blanc. The Fletcher Red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is aged for 24 months in wood with the malolactic fermentation in barrel. It is impressively structured with marked but supple tannins and a hint of smoky oak and there is a subtle minty edge to the dark berry fruit. The Merlot is vibrant, forward and plummy. The Fletcher Red in particular will benefit from a few years’ ageing. A Cabernet Sauvignon is also made as well as Côte Blonde, a Syrah with a touch of Viognier. (DM)
