Williams Selyem Winery Russian River Valley
The Dysons purchased this classic Sonoma property from founders Burt Williams and Ed Selyem in 1998. Winemaker Bob Cabral has stayed on and continues to make the same artisan styles of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel as Williams and Selyem. The Pinots are rich and concentrated, marked by their powerful, earthy tannins, while the Chardonnay can be lusciously rich but with none of the overt tropical notes found in neighbouring wines and an unoaked example is also made. The Zinfandels are striking, concentrated and very pure. A plethora of single-vineyard labels are produced every vintage and rarely are these less than ★★★★. These are Sonoma wines for the longer haul. There have also been releases of two very interesting, rich and intense sweet wines from Gewürztraminer and Muscat. Both are opulent in style but well-structured with a fine mineral-fresh acid balance. A late harvested Port style red also comes from the Vista Verde Vineyard combining the traditional Portuguese varieties of Touriga National, Tinta Cão, Tinta Francesca and Tinta Madeira. (DM)
