At times considered eccentric by some of his neighbours, the late Bailey Carrodus produced a remarkable array of very good to exceptional wines even if on occasion the results have been variable. The estate is now owned by the investors behind Kaesler Wines in the Barossa Valley who intend to carry on in the same vein as Carrodus. Many of the vines are relatively venerable, particularly for the Yarra, with some plantings now well over 30 years old. Dry White No.1 is a Sauvignon Blanc/ Sémillon blend but it is the reds, vinified insmall open fermenters, that have long attracted a cult following. Dry Red No.1 is a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. With Dry Red No.2 he takes up the Shiraz baton, arguably with even more success. Mainly Shiraz with a little Viognier, this is a wine of terrific fruit richness and depth. Also extremely impressive is the Underhill Shiraz but all of the reds are very fine, concentrated and show real finesse. The Pinot Noir is made in a rich, powerful, extracted style, while the few bottles of Carrodus Merlot made caused a sensation with an audacious cellar-door price tag from the very first vintage. A Carrodus Viognier is similarly priced for those with deep pockets and the Carrodus Cabernet Merlot even more so. New and more reasonably priced are Dry Red No.3, based on Touriga Nacional with a hatful of other Portuguese varieties. Also made is a small amount of an impressive fortified port-style wine, Potsorts and a further red blend Agincourt, a touch more upfront than the other reds.
