Zaca Mesa Winery Santa Barbara County
A fairly long-established property for Santa Barbara with a focus on the Rhône varieties. The exception to the Rhône theme is a Chardonnay very much in the tropical-fruit style. It has the malolactic blocked for freshness and gains some complexity from the addition of a touch of Viognier and Roussanne. The varietal Viognier offers simple, straightforward fruit and an impressively piercing peachy varietal purity often edging ★★★. A white blend Z Blanc is also now made which combines the wineries three white grape varieties. Syrah is ripe, dark and smoky in a more medium-weight style than some: more Saint-Joseph in style than Cornas. The dark, juicy Z Cuvée, a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault, is laden with herb, spice and berry flavours and offers great value for money. Like the other wines it will drink well young. The dark, dense and impressively structured Z Three is Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache. Also made are two additional Syrah’s the Mesa Reserve and Black Bear Block. This is produced from the oldest vineyard block of the variety and is a touch pricier than the Z Three. (DM)
